The Challenge Of Choosing A Life Verse For Your Child

How do you pick from the 31,102 verses in the Bible and select just one for your child? God’s word is truth that can teach you how to live your life and more importantly what to live for in the first place. God’s word is powerful and full of promises that can help you get through difficult seasons of life. When selecting a life verse for children, you have the opportunity to impact their future and impress God’s word into their hearts. Here are a few tips to get started in this process.

First, begin with prayer. Come before God and ask for clarity. Ask Him to speak through His word and guide you through the selection. Ask for understanding and wisdom as you steward your children for God’s glory. Pray that God will use the truth found in His word to impact the life of your child forever.

Next, do your research. There is no need for you to flip through the entire Bible searching for that perfect verse. Yes, all of God’s word is inspired, but not every verse is of equal importance when it comes to selecting a life verse. If there is a word or phrase that keeps coming to your mind, begin with that search. See example verses that others have selected and maybe even do a google search for a list of life verses.

Narrow your list and seek wise counsel. After you have selected a few options and have given yourself some time to think and pray, bring these verses to a few strategic people. These friends or family members may one day be outside voices that speak into your child’s life. Talk about what these verses mean and why you narrowed your list to these specific few and then ask for feedback.

Finally, select the verse and commit it to memory. As you pray over your child, speak the truth found in this passage. Display the life verse visually around your house and pray that God will allow this verse, their life verse, to change your child’s future.

Lily’ life verse is 1 Timothy 4:12, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

Liam’s life verse is Luke 2:40, “There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.”

Brittain’s life verse is 2 Samuel 22:31, “God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.”

Margaret’s life verse is Psalm 37:5, “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.”

Harrison’s life verse is 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Have you chosen a life verse for your child? Why did you choose that particular verse?
